Announcing our Solidarity Meals Program

What is it?

Restaurants and the workers they employ are struggling under the COVID-19 quarantine. You may have heard it suggested that everybody buy gift certificates for their favorite places, to use when the pandemic passes. Here’s an idea that improves on that one: local restaurants will set up a running tab called the Solidarity Fund, and anyone that still has resources and wants to add to it can call in and add funds. Likewise, anyone who is having trouble making ends meet in this time of turmoil and crisis can mention the fund and get a hot meal. Restaurant workers get directly employed feeding people who need to eat! This is entirely on the honor system: donors need to be aware that they’re trusting their neighbors to judge their own need accurately, and we ask that people who use the fund do so with honest consideration of their need; if you’re still getting paid or have savings to live on, there are probably people in our community who need this more than you do.

How can I contribute?

Check the list of participating restaurants in the COVID-19 Mutual Aid section on our website, call one and say you’d like to make a contribution (you could also do this when you place a takeout order for yourself.) Just tell them you’d like to add money to the “Solidarity Fund!”

How can I get a meal?

Check the list of participating restaurants in the COVID-19 Mutual Aid section on our website, call one and say you’d like to place an order on the Solidarity Fund (or, if you’re unable to leave your home, you can use our Help Request form to get connected with a volunteer who can bring your food to you.) Just make sure you check with the restaurant to be sure there’s money available in the fund, and if you need delivery get that confirmed ahead of time with our volunteers.
